Apollo 13 was the sixth crewed mission in NASA's Apollo program. It began on April 11, 1970, when the Apollo 13 spacecraft was launched into orbit using the Saturn V rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The mission was originally intended to be the third lunar landing, but due to a technical malfunction, that goal had to be abandoned. Approximately 56 hours into the mission, an oxygen tank in the service module exploded, forcing the crew – consisting of astronauts James Lovell, John Swigert, and Fred Haise – to abandon the lunar module and transfer to the command module.

The Apollo 13 mission became famous for the resourcefulness and efforts of both the astronauts and the ground control team to survive the crisis and safely return to Earth. The phrase "Houston, we have a problem" became one of the most recognizable in the history of spaceflight. Despite the challenges, the crew returned to Earth on April 17, 1970, concluding a successful rescue mission.
